BEFORE AND AFTER CARE

of Permanent Cosmetics
BEFORE-AND-AFTER-CARE

NOTE: Two or more appointments may be necessary to achieve and complete most permanent make-up procedures. It is recommended to have your touch up appointment within 2-6 months of your original procedure.

BEFORE AND AFTER CARE

Remember, no two sides of the face are the same. Perfection is our goal, but, note that nothing is PERFECT. We do not use the “P” word when doing Permanent Cosmetics. Sisters, NOT twins is used universally in this field.

BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE:

IMPORTANT: If there are any blemishes, pimples, active cold sores, sunburn, irritation of the skin of any kind, moles or other skin imperfections in or around the area of the procedure, CAROL FUREY WILL NOT be able to do the procedure until the blemish or area of concern is gone or the mole is removed and healed. If you show up to the appointment and there is an area of concern you will be rescheduled and forfeit your deposit. NO EXCEPTIONS. Do not use aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, ibuprofen for 7-days prior to your procedure. Consult with your physician before discontinuing the use of any medications. You MUST be off Retin-A or Retinols for 7 days prior to your appointment and avoid using on or around the area for 30 days after. If used before 30 days, it can cause the pigments to fade prematurely. If you resume the Retin-A or Retinols after the 30 days, please know that the continued use will fade your permanent makeup prematurely.

FOR EYEBROWS, EYELINERS AND LIP PROCEDURES:

Be prepared for the color intensity of your procedure to be significantly larger, sharper, brighter, or darker than what is expected for the final outcome. It will take time for this transition, based on how quickly the outer layer of your skin heals and exfoliates. The implanted color may change during the first 4 weeks so you shouldn’t worry about it, this is a process! Since delicate skin or sensitive areas may swell slightly or redden, some clients feel it best not to make any social plans for a day or two, following procedure.

FOR EYELINER PROCEDURES:

FOR-EYELINER-PROCEDURES (1)

Please wear your normal make-up and bring your lip or brow pencils to the office on the day of the procedure. DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES DURING OR IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE EYELINER PROCEDURE. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR GLASSES WITH YOU ON THE DAY OF YOUR PROCEDURE. You may resume wearing your contact lenses as soon as your eyes return to their pre-treated condition.

FOR LIP PROCEDURES:

FOR-LIP-PROCEDURES

If you are having lip procedures and have ANY history of cold sores, fever blisters, or herpes simplex, you will be required to contact your physician to obtain the proper prescription medication to prevent such outbreaks. Many physicians prescribe Valtrex ( 12 capsules of 500 mg each). These can be taken 2x a day, two days before micropigmentation and four days after, or as the physician prescribes. If you do not have history of cold sores we still recommend to take Areola/Nipple clients must be off Chemotherapy/Radiation treatment for at least 4 to 6 months. I only do the procedure on clients more than 6 months after the surgery. No exceptions. A surgical report may be requested.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE:

Some residual swelling is normal for ALL procedures. Some clients may have no swelling some may have a lot…this is individualized. You can apply iced packs (no ice directly on skin) to the treated area if necessary. Dry skin, itching and tenderness are common after the procedure. These symptoms will dissipate each day and vary on an individual basis. Color will fade/soften up to 50% or more. The touch up will enhance any area that has faded too much, healing is specific to each client. It is important to realize that you will need a color boost every 1-3 years to maintain it’s fresh natural appearance. If you are out in the sun a lot, have oily skin, use anti-aging creams, Retinol products, natural elements, regular chemical peels, or exercise frequently, you will probably need a color boost every 10 months to 1 year. The better you take care of the treated area, the longer it will last.

AFTER CARE EYEBROWS:

eyebrows

Expect slight swelling, thickness, and/or redness, for 1 – 2 days following the procedure. DO NOT APPLY ANY VASELINE or petrolatum ointments right after, only what is given to you the day of the procedure. Let the skin DRY HEAL by not applying anything but EUCERIN Moisturizer 3 DAYS AFTER the procedure, no before. Do so 3 times at day to keep the area slightly moistened for the following 10 days. Wash with water and pat dry, no soaps no rubbing. If you need to get in Ocean water or wash your hair: apply a thick layer of vaseline with a Q-Tip to protect the area while in contact with water and shampoos. Gently remove it immediately after with a clean Q-Tip.

AFTER CARE EYELINERS:

eyeliner

Expect light to moderate swelling and redness. Ice packs may be used to minimize swelling the day of and the day after the procedure. Use ONLY the recommended ointment the first day and let it DRY HEAL for the next 3 days, then you can apply REFRESH PM

Lubricant Eye Ointment around the treated area for up to 10 days following the procedure. You must use NEW mascara to avoid contamination.

AFTER CARE LIPLINER / LIPCOLOR:

AFTER-CARE-LIPLINER-LIPCOLOR

Expect moderate swelling, usually 1 – 2 days following the procedure. Applying ice packs (no ice directly on skin) for the first 2 hours is important, and should be continued throughout the day. Keep moist the first day ONLY with the recommended ointment (which will be given to you) or Liprotek for the next 7 – 10 days, and then switch to a lip gloss or balm with an SPF of 15 or greater, as the sun tends to fade lip color quickly. After the procedure, the lips may appear to have too much color. The color will become lighter as the epidermis sloughs off. It will appear that you have lost all of your color, however, when your lips have healed completely the dermal layer will gradually become darker. Two or three applications may be required to achieve the desired results. It is not uncommon to lose up to 70% of the color on the first application.

REMEMBER:

REMEMBER
  • DO NOT use any Retin A or Glycolic Acids while healing.

  • DO NOT use peroxide or Neospirin on ANY areas.

  • DO NOT rub, scratch or pick treated areas. Let any scabbing or dry skin naturally exfoliate off. Picking can cause scarring.

  • DO NOT expose area to sun or tanning beds NO OCEAN WATER within 30 days

  • AVOID facials, swimming, and whirlpools, for at least 10 days

  • DO NOT dye or tweeze eyebrows one week before and wait at least 15 days after procedur, if you dye your eyebrows in a regular basis you have to be aware pigment will wear off sooner than expected.

*FAILURE TO FOLLOW POST-PROCEDURAL INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN LOSS OR DISCOLORATION OF PIGMENT.

*THE KNOWN POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM MICROPIGMENTATION ARE: REDNESS, SWELLING, PUFFINESS, BRUISING, DRY PATCHES, AND TENDERNESS, IT IS NORMAL TO LOSE APROXIMATELY 1/3 OF THE COLOR DURING THE HEALING PROCESS. AFTER INITIAL PROCEDURE, THE COLOR MAY APPEAR HEAVIER.

IT WILL APPEAR SOFTER WHEN COMPLETELY HEALED BECAUSE THE COLOR WILL COME FROM THE DERMAL LAYER OF THE SKIN TO THE EPIDERMAL LAYER OF THE SKIN.

TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT: Permanent Cosmetics procedures are affected by the canvas (your skin) that they are performed on. If you skin is sun damaged (even from tanning beds), thick and uneven in texture, and/or excessively dry or oily, the result cannot be expected to be perfect after the initial procedure. Scars on the lips from fever blisters cause pigment removal. Lifestyle, medications, smoking, metabolism, facial surgery, and age of skin, all contribute to fading. Touch ups areneeded between 30 to 90 days after your initial procedure to ensure the best results and to keep your permanent makeup looking the best!Use only the ointments or creams suggested by us.

Eyebrows (Day & Effect)

eyebrows
  • Days 1 & 2: The eyebrows are approximately 20 to 25% darker and bolder in width than they will be when healed. Your skin is red under the pigment, which causes the color of the pigment to appear darker.

There is some swelling, although difficult to actually see due to the thickness of the skin in the eyebrow area. This will subside. Exfoliation, which begins in a few days, will cause excess pigment surrounding the eyebrow procedure to flake away and a more narrow appearance will result. New skin will heal over the pigmented area and result in a softer appearance of your eyebrows. Don’t be concerned that your eyebrows initially appears darker and heavier in size than you desire. This is all part of the process.

  • Day 3: Eyebrows start to itch and will appear a bit thicker in texture. Exfoliation begins.

  • Day 4: The skin begins to flake, peeling from the outside edges first.

  • DO NOT PICK AT IT!.

  • Day 5: Color finishes flaking off and appears softer and grayer for a few days until color clarifies.

  • Days 5-10: The exfoliating process should be over and you start seeing the final color. It takes up to 4 weeks to see the true color through the healed skin.

Eyeliners or Eyelash Enhancement (Day & Effect)

eyeliner
  • Day 1: Swollen, like you’ve been crying, with a heavier eye makeup look.

  • Day 2: Swollen, usually for only a few hours after waking up, with a heavier eye makeup look continuing.

  • Day 3: Swelling decreases with a tight feeling: The pigment begins to lift away from the skin.

  • Day 4: There is a slight “pinching” feeling: Some itching is normal as the skin begins to flake: DO NOT PICK AT IT.

  • Day 5: Blinking movement of the eye usually removes all pigment by this day. Color is somewhat grayish and will take a few more days to clarify to full color.

  • Days 5-10: Exfoliation is gone. now you can see how thick and how much color you got underneath the skin.

Lips (Day & Effect)

AFTER-CARE-LIPLINER-LIPCOLOR
  • Day 1: Swelling, tender, heavy thick lipstick look with a reddish brickcolor effect.

  • Day 2: Slight swelling, reddish and tender with a metallic flavor.

  • Day 3: Less swelling, thicker texture, sore, hot feeling before exfoliationwith an orange color effect.

  • Day 4:Exfoliation begins, very chapped lips.

  • Day 5: Very chapped, but almost finished with first chapping stage.

  • Day 6: A soft, rich color begins to appear.

  • Days 7-13: Lip color disappears and the “frosty” (2 chapping stage)begins as a whitish haze on the lips.

  • Day 14:Color “blooms” from within more and more each day until day 21 (3 weeks post procedure)

  • Day 21:Healing complete; the color you see is the color you have. Your lips will remain a bit dry for a month or two. Use a good balm and they will return to normal, but with full color.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Also refereed as Permanent Cosmetics, cosmetic tattooing and micropigmentation, Permanent makeup has become one of the most popular cost-benefit, rejuvenating not surgical treatments demanded today. Basically it is the cosmetic technique which implants or deposits colored pharmaceutical grade pigments into the upper reticular layer of the dermis. Tiny droplets of costume blended color are skillfully deposited, which is a form of traditional tattooing used to enhance features of the face. The process starts with an initial consultation followed by the actual procedure (safe implantation of pigment), and a follow up visit for adjusting the shape, color or density of the pigment. Properly applied permanent makeup can be more natural and realistic in appearance than conventional cosmetics.

Who is a candidate for Permanent Makeup?

Most people can benefit from some form of Permanent Makeup, this includes males and female patients. Those who: Wish to improve their appearance Want perfectly shaped or fuller looking eyebrows May be allergic to traditional make-up wish to camouflage that eyebrow scar Wear contact lenses Work long hours or with busy schedules Want to stop make-up smudging Athletic people Have shaky hands Are not able to apply their eyeliner, lipliner evenly Want to wake up every morning and be made up!

Is permanent makeup a smart investment?

When it comes to your face you must always chose the best! Do your research, check credentials, insurance and the most important the artistry behind the professional performing this procedures. Remember, it’s your face, and it’s permanent, this is not the time to go price shopping. Besides, compare to other cosmetic treatments, permanent makeup gives long lasting results, immediately rejuvenates and improves your appearance which makes your investment worth it!

How Long Does Each Procedure Take?

The initial procedure will generally take approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours; this includes a consultation where there are records to establish; photographs to take; desired design and color to discuss; the procedure to perform; and the aftercare requirements to discuss.Follow up or color refresher procedures usually do not require the same amount of time.

Are There Any Side Effects During or After the Procedure?

While eyebrows may show little after effect, eyeliner and lips may show slight to moderate swelling. This is very dependent upon the amount of work performed. As examples; an eyelash enhancement will show very little response to the tattooing procedure compared to a more moderate response when wide eyeliner is performed. The same philosophy applies to lip color procedures. A lip liner or blended lip liner will show less effects of the procedure than that of a full lip color. Also, some people swell more from minor skin infractions than others. During the procedure there may be some minor bleeding. This again, is client specific. Many people take blood thinners on a daily basis so some slight bleeding would be expected. Others show little or no signs of bleeding. Bruising is rare but again, if a person is on blood thinners, bruising could occur. What is seen more often is that eyebrows rarely if ever produce any bruising; minor bruising during eyeliner procedures is possible if the skin being tattooed is very thin and close to the vascular system. This also applies to lip procedures in the event the client is more mature. If bruising does occur, typically it is minor and subsides in a few days. There is usually some tenderness for a few days. The color is much darker than you may expect for the first six to ten days. Other less often reported side effects are difficult to determine due to the individuality of each person’s biological system. This is why professional permanent cosmetic technicians require a client history profile be filled out to assess different factors that may contribute to your experience after the tattooing procedure has been completed.

How long does Permanent Make up last? is it Permanent?

It is considered a PERMANENT treatment since color is implanted into the dermis and can not be washed off with conventional face wash or makeup remover. However, and unlike a body tattoo, permanent makeup may only last between 1 to 5 years depending on the person’s life style, daily skin care products used, sun exposure, medications, and chemical peels among other factor that may affect the longevity of the pigment. After the initial procedure it’s recommended to set a follow up visit once at year or every other year to do adjustments on shape if desired and or for color boosting.

Does it hurt?

Most people refer at the sensation as tweezing eyebrow hair, however patient’s comfort is a priority, for that reason a highly effective anesthetic cream is applied 15 minutes prior an a gel during the procedure to minimize any discomfort.

What if I don’t like the results?

During the initial consultations all your questions will be answered, this is a crucial step of the treatment to ensure that you will be completely satisfied with the final results. Every procedure is drawn with pencil before implanting the pigment, that way the necessary adjustments can be made with no problem.

Is Permanent make safe?

It’s totally safe! The pigments used for permanent cosmetics are FDA approved and have been strictly tasted for safe use, a patch test may perform 24 hrs before the procedure to determinate if you have an allergic reaction which is considered rare. I follow the highest hygiene and safety standards, like medical equipment, my permanent makeup device is safe and engineered designed against cross contamination. Disposable and “single use only” needles are used for your safety and mine. All the supplies are one time use as well and everything is discarded after each client.

Can I still get MRI’s?

Numerous studies have shown that even for people who have large body tattoos there is little to no potential for irritation resulting from an MRI. In the rare instance where discomfort resulted, it was localized and very temporary. However, with that said, it is prudent to advise your MRI technician that you have permanent cosmetics.

If I get Botox or fillers done, when should I get my permanent makeup procedures before or after?

Given that Botox has a temporary effect we recommend to have your Permanent makeup done before this kind of injectable is performed. After your procedure you should wait at least 2 weeks to get Botox applied. Fillers for lips should be done 6-8 weeks prior to your scheduled procedure or done 6-8 weeks after, when your lips are totally healed.
